Preface

Welcome to the second edition of Co-Active Coaching. It is an extraordi￾nary experience to look back and see how much the world of coaching

has changed in just a few short years. Back in 1998 when the first edi￾tion was published, if you told people you were a coach, their auto￾matic response would likely have been, “Oh? What sport?” Today, the

profession of coaching as we know it is widespread, familiar to most,

and growing continuously. In our view, it is the demand and desire for

coaching that is pulling the profession ever more deeply into the world.

As we survey the landscape of coaching today, we see the profes￾sion’s dramatic growth, and data from the International Coach Federa￾tion (ICF) help illustrate it. The ICF is the largest association for

professional coaches worldwide. In 1998, the ICF counted fewer than

2,000 members, and less than 140 of those were outside North Amer￾ica. Seven years later, the ICF is still growing, supporting more than

8,000 members; of those, more than 2,000 are outside North America,

representing every major country in the world.

The growth is not just geographic; coaching continues to become

more diverse in its reach as coaches specialize in a wide variety of de￾mographic and interest-related niches. Nearly every age, occupation,

and personal passion has a coach waiting to answer the call.

In the corporate world, where coaching was once the exclusive

perk of executives and rising stars, it is becoming a standard part of

the organizational toolkit to help employees, managers, supervisors,

and, yes, executives in their personal development and achievement.

xiv | CO-ACTIVE COACHING

Organizations have learned that highly motivated and fulfilled employ￾ees at all levels produce high-performance results for the organization.

In fact, many organizations are now bringing coach training into the

organization, so that coaching skills and the coaching context are de￾veloped in-house.

In a related way, the past few years have seen the emergence of a

new branch of coaching: team coaching. It is a complementary ap￾proach to individual coaching, not a substitute. In a world that is in￾creasingly aware of the power of teams inside organizations, team

coaching is on the rise. Coaching for relationship systems is expanding

as well, and not just for romantic relationships, but for families, busi￾ness associates, and other close partnerships.

Even the definition of “coach” is widening. The first edition of the

book was aimed primarily at individual coaches working as individual

practitioners. Today, we see consulting companies offering coaching

services, and a wide variety of professional service providers are adding

coaching or coaching skills to their current practice. More and more,

for example, we see consultants offering ongoing coaching to help en￾sure that changes and new skills take hold and grow.

We also see an emerging emphasis on coaching as an essential skill

set for leaders. Coaching is widely recognized as one of the fundamen￾tal leadership styles that top leaders need in order to operate effectively.

In the first edition, we talked about co-active coaching as not only

a set of professional skills but a unique way of communicating. The na￾ture of the relationship and what is honored are different in a coaching

relationship compared to other relationships, in which there is often a

strong identification with who is dominant and who is not. Today, we

see this “coach approach” spreading from professional coaching rela￾tionships into general use. We see teachers using coaching skills and a

coaching style when these are called for. We see managers, parents,

customer service representatives, and health care workers using coach￾ing skills and a coach approach.

In the years since the first edition, the profession has grown along

with our own understanding of what makes coaching work. Since the
