■ Format
Part 1 of the TOE1C Listening test consists of ten photographs that are printed in your test
book. These photographs are pictures of ordinary situations, and over 60% o f the questions
in this part involve photographs of one or more than one person. The remaining questions
involve photographs of objects/scenes without people and photographs of both people and
objects/scenes. Each of these types accounts for about 15-20% of the questions in this part.
■ Question Description
O The details of photographs are frequently asked about.
© A wide range of nouns and verb forms are used for photograph descriptions.
® The subjects in the answer choices are varied, and the state, action, location, or appearance of the people or the state o f the ob jects/scen es in the photographs is usually the
focus of questions.

You should make use of the short period of time before the recording is played to preview all of the photographs and think of possible descriptions for choosing the correct
statements.
© Look at each ph otograph an d liste n to the four statem en ts carefully.
You cannot just predict a certain answer and immediately choose it. You should wait anj
listen to all four statements for a test item and have to choose the best answer for the
photograph.
© Pay close atten tion to the state m e n ts th at u se ap p rop riate ten ses.
The present continuous tense is mostly used to describe the action of people, while the
present simple tense and present perfect tense are usually used to describe the state of
objects or scenes. You may, therefore, leave out the statements of other tenses, such as
the fulute or past tenses.
O Leave out ob viously incorrect an sw ers.
You should immediately elim inate incorrect answers, which are the statem ents about
the people or objects that do not exist in the photograph or the statem ents that incorrectly describe the action or state in the photograph.
@ Be cautious.aljoyt siajtemeijt? ijiQntiQnjug,cplQrs. .
All photographs given in Part 1 are black and white ones. You, hence, promptly elim
inate statem ents mentioning other colors.
© Identify sim ilar-sounding words.
Generally, a statem ent with a sound-aljke word is not the correct answer. You should
listen attentively to identify these sim ilar-sounding words.

LESSON ¡02Testing Points
Part 1 of the TOEIC test consists of ten questions numbered from 1 to 10. For each question, you
will see a photograph printed in your test book and listen to four statements. Your job is to choose
the statement that best describes the photograph.
Some of the photographs involve one or more than one person, some involve objects or scenes
without people, and the others involve both people and objects/scenes. Based on each particular
photograph, you will have an appropriate answer. Thus, if you practice regularly, you can answer
the questions in this part accurately.
. n i , , , _ , hsteninq (Vmiri'nhit-ision 1. Photographs of People
r
Photographs of people consist of those describing one person and those describing more than one
person. In the former, the correct answer must describe the action, appearance, state or location
of the person in the photograph. In the latter, the correct answer must describe the action, general
state or location of the people, or the action, appearance of each person in the photograph. You
have to select the statement that best describes the photograph by listening to the verbs and their
collocations. Most of these verbs are used in the present continuous tense.
Practice 4> Mp3 008
• Listen and choose the statement which best describes the photograph.

• Listen again and fill the gaps with the missing words.

(B) He is the copy machine.
(C) He is coffee.
(D) He is some papers on the table.
Answ er: (A)
Tips: The man is actually copying som e pages from a book. C hoice (A) is, therefore, the c o rrect answer. Choices (B) and (D) are definitely incorrect because the action fixing and the
object table are not show n. Choice (C) uses a sim ilar-sounding w ord (coffee vs. copy),
w hich easily causes confusion for candidates.
