Mô tả chi tiết
Firstly, I would like to tell you an example, a true story.
Few years ago, My sister’s teacher went to American to study. Once time,
he went to his professor house to ask st about his doctoral thesis . When he came,
the dinner was ready and his professor invited him to dinner. At that time he was
very hungry and want to said “yes” immediately but he refused his invitation and
he was waiting st but His professor did not invite him anymore and enjoyed the
dinner with his family. So during the night, he talked with his professor with the
empty stomach.
We r Vietnamese so it’s not difficult to understand the reason why he
refused the invitation.
Vietnames culture: Vietnames often feel shy when they r invited to dinner or to
lunch, so we will be often formal in behaviour. So in this case, my sister’s teacher
was influenced by Vnmese culture so he refused the invitation and he thought that
he would accept when his professor begged him few more times but he did not.
On the other hand, in American culture: Amercans are very straightforward so
they think anyone refuse to do st means they tell the truth and “don’t beg another
to do what they don’t want to do”. the professor on the one hand did not know
Vnmese culture, in the other hand he is very straightforward so he did not invite
his student once again.
From the story we know that language is heavily influenced by culture and Culture
styles can and do create misunderstandings in conversations
Through speaking we try to eliminate creating misunderstanding, but
sometimes this is a very hard thing to do.
Therefore, If u want to know about the language u have to know his culture.
If not, u’ll get many troubles.
language and culture are not fundamentally inseparable!
The misunderstandings can be solved by experience and learning
