Subject + had + past participle
My brother had done the ironing when I got home.
Affirmative I had been you had been he/she /it had been
Interrogative had I been? had you been? had he/she/it had been?
Negative I had not been you had not been he/she/it had not been
You are talking about the past and want to say that something
happened before this time: When I arrived home she had gone.
