Summary

CRANIOPLASTY WITH CARBON COMPOSITE "INTOST - 2"

Many of alloplastic materials were used for cranioplasty; tantalium, titanium, acrylic, polyethylene,

silicone, ceramics and carbon composite. Objective: to assess the efficacy of cranioplasty with carbon

composite "intost - 2" during ten years (1998 - 2008) in the Departement of neurosurgery of Saint - Paul

hospital. Methods: Retrospective Cross - sectional studies of 187 patients skull defect underwent

cranioplasty with carbon composite "intost - 2". Results: 80/187 cases had frontal skull defect and 62/187

had fronto - temporal defect. One hundred and forty five patients (77.5%) had large defect (> 5 cm) while

thirty eight patients (20.3%) had very large defect (> 8 cm). The operation successful rate was 97%

(183/187). Discussion: the position and size of skull defect were related with surgical indication and

implant. It is very difficult to choose the implant and to fixe it for large skull defect. Conclusion: the

cranioplasty with carbon composite "intost - 2" had good result in spite of large defect.
