ABSTRACT
The pandemic of Covid-19 has become plenty. Students at the Industrial University of Ho Chi
Minh city have learned online. The speaking skills are carried out in distance learning classrooms.
The study aims to find the advantages and disadvantages of the English-majored sophomores when
engaging in role-play activities in online speaking classes. The researcher uses the quantitative
methodology and surveys 200 learners by the online questionnaire. Findings show that the secondyear students at FFL-IUH participating in role-play activities have advantages in online speaking
skills classes. Learners improve their speaking skills because they become less nervous and
embarrassed and enhance students' motivation. The English-majored sophomores can take
advantage of online speaking to improve ICT skills and increase their reflex in English. The results
also point out some disadvantages in learning to speak online through role-play activities. Students
face obstacles such as lacking concentration, not being good at expressing feelings relying on
resources on the Internet and having technical problems. However, there are some
recommendations for the second-year student at FFL-IUH in learning to speak online more
effectively when participating in role-play activities.
