A chilly day at Oak Glen Preserve
INTRODUCTION 1
WITH ITS YEAR-ROUND SUNSHINE, beautiful and varied topography, and relatively mild climate, California has historically been an
agricultural Shangri-la, encompassing all manner of farms, orchards,
vineyards, and ranches. But the Golden State has struggled with a
devastating drought in recent years, lending even more urgency to the
growing sustainable-farming movement.
This guide spotlights the smaller-scale, family-owned farms, vineyards,
and ranches that have expanded their operations beyond agriculture
into hospitality and education, opening their doors to visitors to
offer a deeper look at rural life and how to produce food sustainably
and responsibly. It’s written for everyone who cares about where our
food comes from and how agriculture affects the planet, whether
you’re a parent yearning to teach your children valuable life skills,
an outdoors enthusiast, an environmentalist, an avid gardener, an
adventurous foodie, or simply someone looking for a new and enlightening travel experience.
Visiting the farms featured here will take you to some of the most gorgeous parts of the state, from breathtaking coastal cliffs to oak-studded
foothills to rolling orchards and vineyards. And while I positively basked
in all of the natural and pastoral beauty during my travels, by far the most
rewarding part of writing this book was getting the chance to know so
many farmers. Observing firsthand—and sometimes participating in—
the immense amount of preparation, planning, labor, and sacrifice that
goes into running a farm gave me even more respect for the men and
women who devote their lives to producing food for other people. When
you do go on a farm stay, tour, or visit, I encourage you to spend some
time chatting up your hosts; I guarantee that you’ll be blown away by
their breadth and depth of knowledge. As a nonfarmer, I would never
be so audacious as to claim I know a lot about farming. What I can say
INTRODUCTION
with confidence after my experience researching this book is that I have
learned a LOT about farming.
My hope is that this guide will in turn give you a better understanding
of how our food is produced, along with the skill, dedication, patience,
and hard work required to produce it responsibly. With any luck, you
may even be inspired by your travels to start farming yourself, whether
that means a few containers on the patio, a backyard chicken coop,
a community or school garden, or even an honest-to-goodness ranch
in the country. Because one thing is certain: The world needs more
passionate and sustainable farmers.
