Summary
GREEN TOBACCO SICKNESS AMONG TOBACCO FARMERS AND
ASSOCIATED FACTORS: A STUDY FROM LAU THUONG COMMUNE,
VO NHAI DISTRICT, THAI NGUYEN PROVINCE
The Green Tobacco Sickness (GTS) is reported to be common among tobacco farmers. This
syndrome include several symptoms, such as vomiting, nausea, weakness, dizziness, suddenly change
blood pressure and heart beat v.v. Objectives: To (1) Describe the occurrence of different symptoms of
GTS among tobacco farmers; (2) Analyze the association between the occurrence of GTS symptoms
and some socio - economic factors, as well as time spending for in tobacco farming. Methods: This is a
cross - sectional study conducted in 597 persons aged from 15 years and above in Lau Thuong
commune, Vo Nhai district. Thai Nguyen. Face to face interviews were conducted employing
structured questionnaire. Individual information and information of GTS symptdms occurred and time
spent for tobaccos farming within the last month prior to the interview were collected. Results: the rate
of having at least a GTS symptoms during 1 month was 40.2% (33.9 % among man and 46.4% among
women); the mean of number of symptoms was 1.4 (1 for men and 1.8 for women), median of number
of symptoms among those who reported ill was 3. GTS symptoms among women were 1.7 times more
likely than among men. Those who spent 20 days and more in the last month for tobacco farming
were 6.1 times more likely to have GTS symptoms than those who spent only 10 days for tobacco
farming. Conclusion: There is a significant association between time spend for tobacco farming and
the occurrence of GTS symptoms. To be a woman and have lower education level and economic status
are predictors of getting GTS symptoms.
