What is TOEIC? TOEIC Academy
What Is Toeic?
TOEIC, which stands for Test of English for International Communication, measures English
proficiency in a work-related environment at advanced and intermediate levels. It is designed
to give an accurate measurement of the English capabilities of people who do not use English
as their mother tongue. Each year there are 4 million people from more than 60 countries
taking the test for various purposes, from seeking jobs to getting promotions.
TOEIC Test Areas
As TOEIC measures the candidate's proficiency in the workplace and everyday communication, the
test questions are based on real-life work settings in an international environment (meetings,
travel, telephone conversations, etc).
TOEIC test questions include various settings and situations, such as:
(1) Corporate Development: research , p ro d u ct d e v e lo p m e n t
(2) Dining Out: business and inform al lunches, b a n q u e t, recep tio n s
(3) Entertainment: c in em a, theater, m usic, art, exh ibition, m u seu m , m ed ia
(4) Finance and Budgeting: ban king , in vestm en t, ta x e s , acc o u n tin g
(5) General Business: co n tract, n eg o tiatio n , m erg ers, m arketin g , sales, w arranties, business
planning, co n feren ce, lab o r relation
(6) Health: m edical insurance, visiting d o c to rs, d en tist, clinics
(7) Housing/Corporate Property: co n stru c tio n , sp e cific atio n , buying and renting, electric and
g as services
(8) Office: board m eetin g, c o m m itte e , letters, te le p h o n e , fax, e -m a il, office eq u ip m en t
(9) Personnel: recruiting, hiring, retiring, salaries, p rom otio n, jo b app lication
(10) Purchasing: sho pping, o rdering, su p p lies, shipping, invoice
(11) Travel: trains, airplan es, taxis, ferries, c a r rental, tech n ical areas
To ensure that the test measures what it is supposed to in a fair, valid and reliable way, these
characteristics are common of the test items:
Vocabulary, grammar and idioms are not specifically American English.
■ Culture-specific and job/profession-specific situations are avoided.
Names from different countries are included.
Different English accents are used throughout the test - mainly American, British,
Canadian and Australian accents.
