“Truth is within us; it takes no rise

from outward things, whate’er you may believe.

There is an inmost center in us all,

Where truth abides in fullness; and around,

Wall upon wall, the gross flesh hems it in,

This perfect clear perception – which is truth.

A baffling and perverting carnal mesh

Binds it, and makes all error – and to know,

Rather consists in opening out a way

Whence the imprisoned splendor may escape,

Than in effecting entry for a light

Supposed to be without.”

From “Paracelsus” by Robert Browning.

Foreward

In writing this book, I have sought to provide you, the reader, with a practical manual for

achieving spiritual growth. It was my goal to distinguish this book by making it a system that

anyone can use. Thus, for the most part, there is an absence of technical terminology and

unnecessary theoretical complexity.

I have sought throughout to present my findings from both the esoteric and personal

development fields. Both have a tremendous amount to offer the willing seeker. Apart from

anything else, we live in the West. Many of the systems evolved for the East work best there,

where both the style of life and the spiritual assumptions governing daily life are very

different to what Westerners are used to.

You do not need to become a monk and renounce the world in order to work with the

concepts presented in this book. On the contrary, it is intended to be used by you, right

where you are. This is not a book for spiritual Einsteins either. YOU really can use these

ideas to make progress in your life. This is not a book for someone else. This is a book YOU

can use.

In writing it, I have also remained humbly aware of my own journey on the spiritual path.

My own access to the Higher Self is growing steadily. I make no claims at all to being

perfect in this. Thus, this book is as much a manual for me as it is for you. The principles

described here are valid for all, and should be returned to again and again; to refresh your

memory and to go ever deeper as you progress along the path. This is as true for me, the

author, as it is for you, the reader.

A key difference that I have striven for is for practicality throughout. There are

enough metaphysical books out there engaging in a lot of interesting discussion and leaving

you no further advanced than you where when you first started reading. This book is

different. If you will put a small portion of the ideas presented here into use, your spiritual

growth, and increased access to divine wisdom, are assured. If you put the entire system to

work, there is no end to the possibilities that will open up for you.

So, I wish you Bon Voyage. This is a journey which, like life itself, will be full of spills

and thrills. Have fun on the way. Above all else, learn that God is not a million miles away

or “out there” somewhere. The Source of ALL – the Higher Self - is closer than you could

ever have imagined possible… In the depths of your heart!

Best Wishes,

Chapter 1: Introduction To The Higher Self

The Modern Spiritual Dilemma

Who am I?…..

What am I here for? What did I come to do? How do I begin to access my full potential as a

human being? Why bother in the first place?……

These are the questions most people ask themselves at one time or another in their lives. The

tragic reality of modern existence is that few of us ever find out. We fail to live up to our full

potential, or to achieve the most meagre of our secret aspirations. In the West, we have

freedom of expression, an excellent degree of liberty, and access to a vast range of

knowledge at little cost. Yet, the sheer pressure of daily living prevents us from even

beginning to fulfil our potential. Each person knows deep down that he or she is here for

something. There is a reason for being born. But what on earth is it? We seem too distracted

to find out.

You may read books and attend seminars. Often, you can feel inspired by what you learn.

However, at other times you may feel overwhelmed or overawed by the superior

advancement of the teacher. How can you hope to achieve such levels?….

Within many spiritual seekers, a quiet despair builds up. A person may sincerely want to

release their creativity, find their life’s purpose, and experience spiritual advancement. Yet,

time and daily pressures subtly distract us all. Before we know it, years have passed. Little

has been achieved. We may be paying the bills, raising the kids and driving a desirable car.

Nevertheless, the seemingly inevitable sacrifice of our real objectives can leave us deeply

unsatisfied with how life has worked out.

Worse still, many sincere seekers look around and observe others making progress and

passing them by. Nothing feels worse than knowing you have tremendous undeve loped

potential, and at the same time seeing others forging way ahead, whilst you do nothing.

Spirituality is not a race and comparisons are as unhelpful in this arena as in any other.

Nevertheless, many people do secretly harbor a “what’s wrong with me?” mentality when

they experience this sort of thing. It is a common feeling; not so much resentful jealousy, but

rather an unconscious awareness that they themselves could have done far better, if they had

only put their minds to it. Indeed, this is the absolute truth of the matter.

Each of us has potential access to infinite inner wisdom and unlimited potential. The power

of a single person who accesses his/her full inner potential is beyond imagination. We

Page 11 Copyright © 2002. Asoka Selvarajah. Website: Mystic Visions

have seen hints of what is possible. The stories of spiritual masters such as Jesus and

Buddha, and more recently Gandhi, show the level of wisdom, charisma and sheer influence

over large masses of people that is possible when self-mastery has been achieved. Secular

examples of accessing our complete human potentiality include Thomas Edison, Leonardo da

Vinci, and Michelangelo.

Of course, it is easy to raise these people up on pedestals and claim that we could never be

like them. However, it is always the case that tremendous achievement is the result of single￾minded dedication towards a desired goal. It is the result of accessing the hidden potentials

that lie within. It has been truly said by Napoleon Hill, Earl Nightingale, and others that:

“What the mind of man can conceive and believe, it can achieve.”

Most of us have no trouble with the conceiving part of this formula. However, far fewer of

use are able to believe what we can conceive, let alone put into practice a concerted plan for

its attainment.

Moreover, the idea that there lies within each human being untapped infinite potential is

more than people are prepared to accept. In this “believe it when I see it” world we live in,

the idea that anything significant or useful lies beyond waking consciousness is too much to

swallow. Even spiritually oriented people may give intellectual assent to the idea, without

actually believing it to be true of themselves.

The Miracle Of The Human Brain

The mind is a complex miracle. In the last few decades, scientists have learned a tremendous

amount regarding both brain and mind. However, what we know is as nothing compared to

what we do not. The more we discover, the more staggering the human psyche seems to be.

Complex and creative, it always has a new surprise in store.

The human brain is rapidly becoming one of the great marvels of the 20th century. Only in

recent years have we come close to conceiving of its incredible potential. Earlier in the 20th

century, Science believed that we utilize 50% of our brain capacity. In the 1960’s, this

estimate was revised to 40%, and then it dropped again 20-30% in the 1970’s. By the 1980’s,

we were down to somewhere between 5-20%.

Current estimates indicate that the figure is actually closer to 1% or less! Doubtless, this

figure too may be subject to revision in the future. So what is the rest of it doing? To all

intents and purposes, our brains seem to be just coasting; marking time for some indefinite

and mysterious purpose. We have yet to discover what that purpose is.

Your brain is made up of a huge number of individual cells - 1,000,000,000,000 or more.

Each brain cell possesses literally thousands of branches emanating from it; connecting it to

thousands of adjacent brain cells to form an infinitely complex web. In a real sense, every

brain cell is connected via this system to every other brain cell. This means that the brain has

undreamed of potential. It is infinite in its capabilities.

Brain expert, Tony Buzan, is fond of saying that the total number of thoughts which the

human brain is capable of is the number 1 followed by 10.5 million kilometres of noughts!

“No human yet exists who can use all the potential of his brain. This is why we don’t

accept any pessimistic estimates of the limits of the human brain. It is unlimited!”

Professor Petr Anokhin, Russian Neuro-Psychologist

Sadly, rather than make use of this great miracle, we instead delegate all the great

achievements of the human race to those who are willing to use just a little bit more of that

vast capacity that we all possess. We label them geniuses. Then we can sit back in awe,

absolved from any further action. After all, we are inadequate, whilst THEY are rare

geniuses; extraordinarily gifted from the very start. The tragedy is that with some serious

effort, we might have been amongst their ranks.

Current computer technology cannot even begin to reproduce the full power of the human

brain. The truth is that we have the single most incredible computer ever devised – a treasure

beyond price – sitting right between our own ears and yet most of us consistently fail to use

it for anything more dramatic than planning our holidays or the weekly trip to the

supermarket.

To gain an accurate perspective on the immense range of possibilities of which the brain is

capable, a few examples are worth examining:

(1) Antonio di Marco Maghliabechi was born in Florence in 1633. His parents could

not afford to give him any schooling whatsoever. Instead, he helped out in the shop

of a local fruit seller. He spent his spare time trying to decode what was written on

the papers used to wrap the fruit.

One customer, a local bookseller, saw him doing this and took him back to his own

shop. He was utterly astounded to discover that Magliabechi was able to recognize

and remember all the books shown to him after only a very short while. He was

taught to read, through the sponsorship of the bookseller. It was then that his

memorization abilities really took off.

He was soon able to memorize virtually everything he read at blinding speed.

Moreover, this included all the punctuation marks! A sceptic gave him a book that

Magliabechi could not possibly have seen before, and asked him to read it. He did so

Page 13 Copyright © 2002. Asoka Selvarajah. Website: Mystic Visions

Previous Next

at incredible speed and returned the book almost immediately. On being tested, it was

obvious that he did indeed remember the book in its entirety. Indeed, the original

lender later pretended to have lost the book. Magliabechi obligingly copied out the

entire book word for word from memory, including every comma and full stop!

However, it did not stop here. He continued to deve lop these skills throughout his

life. He was hired by the Grand Duke of Tuscany to be his librarian, and he soon

developed the reputation of having memorized the entire library. He was seen to

absorb the entire contents of a page of writing with just a single momentary glance.

He could read several large volumes at night before he went to sleep; spending at

most half an hour on each.

(2) In the 2000 championships, World memory champion, Dominic O’Brien

memorized 1,780 digits in an hour, 962 playing cards (i.e. 18 ½ decks) in an hour,

201 consecutive numbers spoken two seconds apart, and achieved a world speed

record of memorizing 316 digits in just five minutes. Back in 1994, he set the world

record for memorizing a single pack of cards - just 43.59 seconds!

(3) On June 18th 1980, Mrs. Shakuntala Devi of India multiplied together the

following two 13-digit numbers (7,686,369,774,870 x 2,465,099,745,779) in her

head in just 28 seconds. These numbers were picked at random by the Computer

Department of Imperial College, London.

(4) General John Zizka, who lived from 1370-1424, is one of the great unsung

military geniuses of all time. He consistently led untrained peasant bands, armed

with little more than farming tools and no cavalry whatsoever, against vastly superior

numbers of highly trained professional soldiers. Moreover, he won every time!

Although blind in one eye, he led a mere 4000 men in 1421 against the 40,000 strong

army of the Emperor Sigismund. The result was that he won and captured Prague.

Later that year, Zizka was blinded in his second eye. Yet, within one week of this, he

led his armies to victories over the Emperor and the Pope. This meant that he was

able to mentally image the entire battle terrain, as well as the changing placement of

all the troops. From that time on, he not only continued to function as commander of

the armies, but also ran the Hussite government too. No human opponent ever

defeated him in battle.

Several decades before Leonardo, Zizka invented a crude form of tank – a covered

peasant wagon loaded with light artillery. These advanced in numbers of several

hundreds at a time, destroying the armoured knights of his opponents – both infantry

and cavalry. In most of these battles, he was outnumbered 10-1, yet he always

triumphed.

These are just a few examples of what the human brain is capable of. There are many others.

Yet, why were we given this incredible instrument if we insist on using so little of it? Nature

never creates redundancy. Everything is there for a purpose. So what is this vast untapped

brain capacity really for? If we could learn to tap just a tiny fraction of its literally infinite

potential, we would have the power to change ourselves and the world at the same time.

Scientists already know that the conscious mind is only a tiny speck compared to the

vastness of the subconscious - the part that regulates the body's biological processes, and

stores away every single event that we experience in our lives. In like manner, might it be

that there are other capacities of which Science knows nothing? The human brain is like a

huge palace, intended for someone who is currently either absent, or whose power has been

usurped.

The Inner Guide

Modern psychology knows only of the existence of the Conscious and Subconscious parts of

the human mind. It has yet to discover anything that could be labelled "Super-Conscious".

However, in recent years the work of Jungian psychologists (followers of the methods and

theories of the famous Swiss Psychologist, Carl Jung) has gone a long way to show that

such a state of being does exist. Cases of multiple personality disorder (MPD) clearly show

that it is possible for a single person to exhibit completely separate, distinct personalities.

You may have heard of split personality, where two separate personalities can exist within a

single body? With MPD, there are more than two; cases with as many as ten, or even twenty

distinct personalities have been recorded! Moreover, each persona has its own particular

characteristics, likes & dislikes. They may be of different ages and nationalities. Some may

even exhibit specific physical ailments; such as skin rashes or diabetes. These only appear

when that particular personality is inhabiting the body!

Whilst investigating these phenomena, the researchers discovered an amazing thing. There

existed one non-assertive personality that was very different from the rest. This personality

exhibited the characteristics of being loving, gentle, helpful and non-judgmental. The

researchers labelled this personality the Inner Self Helper. It was found to be present in

most, if not all, of the patients with MPD.

The Inner Self Helper was the only personality in the body that was fully aware of the

existence of the others. Despite this, it made no attempt to control or exorcise them. Whilst it

was perfectly capable of integrating all the discordant personalities into one, it stated that it

would only do so if they all agreed to be integrated. This is a very important point for our

own study. As you will discover, this Inner Helper never forces its will upon you or tries to

invade.

Mystics and metaphysical teachers frequently refer to a faculty known as the "Higher Self"

or "God-Self" latent within Man. This faculty is usually equated with the presence of God

himself. At the very least, it is considered to be the part of us that is in intimate contact with

God, and the higher spiritual realms.

Carl Jung referred to a Collective Unconscious where all the knowledge and experience of

every human being who ever lived is stored. According to Jung, it is available to anyone

under certain circumstances. From his studies on the dreams of thousands of his patients,

Jung observed a profound and hidden wisdom in dreams. This wisdom is usually shielded

from out normal waking consciousness. Jung believed profoundly in the existence of a

"dream-maker" - a higher consciousness, with direct access to the Collective Unconscious,

who seeks to speak to us through our dreams.

There are many famous historical examples for believing in the power of inner guidance.

Socrates was known to conduct a running conversation with someone who was not

physically present; his daemon, as he called it. Albert Einstein described how he would sit

by his front door and watch the clouds drift by in the sky. His head would get a little dizzy

and new ideas would just drift in. Edgar Cayce, the famous American mystic, would enter a

trance in order to access his Higher Self. In this state, he could accurately diagnose illnesses

and prescribe cures, as well as give prophecies and teachings.

Moses seems to received his guidance by ascending to the top of a mountain and talking to a

burning bush. Both the mountain and the bush are symbols for ascending to a high place

within himself and consulting the Source of Being, also called the Higher Self. In the book of

Exodus, he gives specific directions regarding sanitation, nutrition and disease control. They

were thousands of years ahead of their time. If implemented, these methods could actually

have prevented the Black Death in Europe thousands of years later! In fact, it was only in the

19th century that Science finally caught up sufficiently to confirm the validity of his methods.

Paul Solomon, the renowned American mystical teacher, described how he accidentally

discovered his own Higher Self during a hypnosis session. Witnesses reported how the

unconscious Mr. Solomon suddenly began to speak in a different voice and with an

intelligence and wisdom that he did not normally possess in everyday waking consciousness.

The being stated that it was not an external spirit. Rather, it was a part of Mr. Solomon that

he was not normally aware of, but that was available to him at any time he cared to access it.

Paul Solomon himself was utterly startled to hear this account when he was awoke. He only

believed it when he listened to a tape of the hypnosis session. His own voice was discussing

deep spiritual matters that his conscious mind was ignorant of! In subsequent sessions, the

Higher Self went on to reveal a method by which Mr. Solomon, or indeed anyone, could

consciously access their Higher Self at any time they wished.

Many other examples abound to demonstrate that the process of seeking inner guidance is

nothing new. In fact, it has been practiced by some of the most prominent individuals in

Tải ngay đi em, còn do dự, trời tối mất!
