Lesson 6 Ship Equipment

It is absolutely necessary for a ship to be equipped with varied ship equipment to

satisfy the needs of voyage, harbour, operation and safety. Ship equipment varies

according to different purposes of vessels, and usually concerns the equipment for the

rudder and anchor as well as for the life-saving, cargo-lifting and mooring.

1. The Rudder Equipment

The rudder equipment is a plant to maneuverability, by which a vessel is able to ensure

mentioned in the chapters of seakeeping performances.

The main components of the rudder equipment include steering wheel, drive

mechanism, steering gear, steering mechanism, rudder, rudder stock, rudder carrier,

rudder stopper and rudder angle indicator. As far as the drive mechanism, steering gear

and steering mechanism are concerned, a choice may be made among three different

operation modi, namely, mechanical, hydraulic or electrical-driven. Moreover, an

automatic steering gear has already found wide application at the present time, which

joins the traditional steering gear to an electrical compass and calibrates course errors

automatically during voyage.

2. The Anchor Equipment

Vessels in harbour will, if not moored, drift away due to the external forces of wind,

current and wave impact and so forth. The anchor equipment acts the role of a mooring

unit to stop a vessel from drifting and, under certain particular conditions, it can be

applied to handle a vessel as some auxiliary means as well.

The anchor equipment is made up of anchor, anchor chain (cable chain), hawsepipe,

chain stopper, chain pipe, chain locker, anchor windlass ( chain windlass) and capstan

windlass ( anchor winch).
