Received 15 February 2013

Fifty terpenoid and steroid compounds were isolated from the n-hexane, ethyl acetate and n-butanol extracts of flie

Heantos 4 plants Theu structures have been elucidated by mass, NMR spectroscopy and companson with pubhshed data.

Keywords: Heantos 4, triterpenoid, steroid, antidrug medication.

1. INTRODUCTION

The antidrug medication Heantos is a

Vietnamese folk remedy used for the freatment of

opiate addiction. The herbalist, Mr. Tran Khuong

Dan has collected and hand HEANTOS over to the

Institute of Chemistry-Viebiam Academy of Science

and Technology. This remedy has been studied and

improved the formulation, preparation method and

standardization giving the latest product HEANTOS

4. This product has been evaluated toxicologically

and finally clinically through three phases under the

guidance ofthe Vietnam Ministery of Health (MOH)

and now already authorised by the MOH for

production and utilisation. To learn more about the

chemical constituents of this remedy as well as the

relationship between the chemical structure of the

constituents and the biological activities, this study

has been carrying out. In an another paper [I] we

reported the isolation of alkaloids and nifrogen￾containing compounds from HEANTOS 4 plants.

This report deals with the isolation of triterpenoid

and steroid compounds from HEANTOS 4 plants as

well as the biological activities of typical isolated

substances thereof.

2.1. Instruments anti Chemicals

NMR: Varian Unity 30('. MS

analytical purposes: Merck TLC aluminium sheets

silica gel 60 F254 (layer thickness 0.2 mm) were

used. Silica gel Merck 60 (0.040-0.063 mm) is used

for column chromatography.

2.2. Extraction and Isolation method

The Heantos plants were collected and scientific

names determined. The plant materials were dried,

ground and then exhaustively extracted with EtOH;

H2O (90:10) at room temperafrire. The organic

solvent was evaporated under vacuum and aq. soln.

was partitioned with n-hexane, EtOAc and n-BuOH,

successively giving n-hexane; EtOAc- and n-BuOH

- exfracts.

Each obtained exfract was purified over a

silicagel, washing gradient with appropriate solvent

systems to give fractions. Rechromatography of

these fractions on different chromatographic

methods such as normal, flash silicagel, sephadex

LH-20, reversed phase RP-18 columns eluting with

convenient solvents, preparative thin layer

chromatography and recrystallisation have been

used to give pure compounds.

3. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

38 terpenoids were isolated from Heantos plants,

including monoterpenes (1-6), sesquiterpenes (7-lfl).

^ 402; For norcarotenoids (11-16), other terpenes (17-19),
