Update Roger Bacon's Moralis Philosophia: Franciscan

Institute Conference at Saint Bonaventure University

Announcement published by Timothy Johnson on Monday, September 13, 2021

Type:

Call for Papers

Date:

November 1, 2021

Location:

New York, United States

Subject Fields:

Art, Art History & Visual Studies, Geography, History of Science, Medicine, and Technology,

Philosophy, Religious Studies and Theology

The Franciscan Institute at Saint Bonaventure University requests proposals (200-250 words) for

scholarly papers and complete panels (3 to 4 papers) for the conference (July 21-24, 2022) dedicated

to Roger Bacon’s Moralis Philosophia. This gathering will celebrate the new English translation of

this critical text by two eminent scholars of the Doctor Mirabilis, Jeremiah Hackett, and Thomas S.

Maloney. Proposals should explore themes in the Moralis Philosophia in the context of Bacon’s

writings, medieval culture, and the potential implications for contemporary studies in the humanities

and sciences.

Ten bursaries covering registration and room/board costs are available to those presenting papers

on-site for the conference with the intent of editing their papers for publication in collaboration with

the Franciscan Institute. Potential participants are also encouraged to submit paper and panel

proposals for virtual sessions. While the conference intends to offer on-site panels and

accomodations, the Franciscan Institute at Saint Bonaventure University is fully prepared to move to

a hyprid model if the situation demands it. Proposals should indicate a preference for on-site or

virtual presentations.

Panel and paper proposals will be accepted at

https://www.sbu.edu/academics/academic-resources/franciscan-institute/programs-conferences/roger￾bacon-paper-proposal no later than November 1, 2021. Notice regarding the acceptance of papers

and panels will be communicated to interested individuals no later than January 10, 2022.
