This second edition is dedìcated to the memory of
Len Gertler
1923-2005
Len was one of Canada's leading city and regional planners. He was the íounding
director of the School of Urban and Regional Planning át the University of Waterloo, which he joined in 1966. Following his retirement from teaching, he became
vice-chair of the Ontario Environmental Review Tribunal. His research and writing íocused ôn regional planning, urban policy, and the Canadian environment.
One of his most signiíkant and lasting achievements was to head the planning
study, commissioned by the province of Ontario, thát led to the protection of the
Niagara Escarpment by the Government of Ontario and its subsequent designation as a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve.
