Prefac e
This source book is one of a continuing UNIFE M series which aims to increase awareness of the range of technological options and sources of expertise, as well as indicating
the complex nature of designing and successfully implementing technology development and dissemination programmes.
UNIFEM was established in 1976, and is an autonomous body associated since 1984
wit h the United Nations Development Programme. UNIFE M seeks to free women from
under-productive tasks and augment the productivity of their work as a means of
accelerating the development process. It does this through funding specific women's
projects which yield direct benefits and through actions directed to ensure that all
development policies, plans, programmes and projects take account of the needs of
women producers.
I n recognition of women's special roles i n the production, processing, storage, preparation and marketing of food, UNIFE M initiated a Food Cycle Technology project i n 1985
wit h the aim of promoting the widespread diffusion of tested technologies to increase
the productivity of women's labour i n this sector. While global in perspective, the initia l
phase of the project was implemented i n Africa in view of the concern over food security
i n many countries of the region.
A careful evaluation of the Africa experience i n the final phase of this five-year programme showed that there was a need for catalytic interventions which would lead to
an enabling environment for women to have easier access to technologies. This would
be an environment where women producers can obtain information on the available
technologies, have the capacity to analyse such information, make technological choices
on their own, and acquire credit and training to enable the purchase and operation of
the technology of their choice. This UNIFE M source book series aims to facilitate the
building of such an environment.
