They chose Ulysses to carry out this rescue mission, for many reasons... But perhaps the most convincing

reason was his unique ability to "see" into the subconscious of other people and, without speaking, directly

communicate with their minds... And so the Story begins .

It is about the Eternal Human saga….

WHY?

It is estimated that a newborn baby has a memory capacity thousands of

times greater than that of the largest computer on earth to-date. By the

age of three, the baby's intelligence, and his ability to learn and to

associate, far surpasses the ability of all the computers combined. Yet on

his twenty-first birthday, this grown baby is very likely to be profoundly

and permanently confused. Furthermore, his chances of ever regaining

intellectual coherency are slim. To appreciate the powerful forces that

manage to generate such disarray in the "human computer", it is worth

shedding some light on its capacity versus the electronic computer. At this

moment hundreds of scientists are devoting their best talents in attempts

to teach the electronic computer the simple skill of recognizing an image.

That skill is well known to a year old infant.

Meanwhile, hundreds of other dedicated scientists have been spending

the last several years attempting to teach the computer to interpret the

sounds of the human spoken language. That skill is well accomplished by a

two years old child.

Yet the same "highly unintelligent electronic machines" are smart

enough to control and coordinate our vehicles, stores, banks and industry.

They are even involved in our media, entertainment, education, and health

care. This little brain behind the screen has the ultimate say in the

design of most transportation vehicles, fighting machines, civil

construction, and even today's fashion and music.

This idea raises a question: How can such a "meager minded" machine

with an intelligence in some cases, of less than a little baby exercise so

much control over our world, yet we, who are equipped with an even more

sophisticated computer, barely control our own lives?

5

In fact, our super computer often turns against us and spins our mind

into an endless circle of confusion. It is the type of confusion that leads

many youngsters to drinking, drug abuse, and suicide. It is also the power

that throws many helpless souls into the pits of fanatic religion and

elusive spiritualism. It is the type of confusion that makes people the

enemies of themselves and turns friends into foes. It rules our working

environment and overwhelms our political system. Stumbling through these

clouds of confusion, many adults concluded that there really is no sense in

this world and, if sense does exist, it must be beyond comprehension. So,

in despair, they embark on a futile and life long journey of self- deceit.

Layer after layer of misconception and false notion are loaded into their

data- base. In turn, the corrupted data- base further pushes the human

super-computer into the endless spiral of more confusion. And then, to

insure no possible recovery, a huge warning label is set on the spiraling

state of confusion; it reads “Don't Touch. This computer suffers from the

incurable virus known as stupidity.”

So here are the key questions: How can such a potent computer be

transformed from an asset into a liability? What are those enormous

programming powers that cripple the human computer? Who is perpetuating the

spiral of confusion and where will it end?

ULYSSES_FROM_PLANET_PROGRESS

Ulysses arrived on Planet Earth with an invisible space ship after

light years of travel. He came from Planet Progress. It was only during the

last two generations that the people of Planet Progress actually secured

the survival of the human species on their planet. They came very close to

self-extinction due to a chain of events that seemed beyond their control.

The current scientific belief is that the close call of self-destruction

was prevented by the planet's global regulatory system. Ulysses himself

served as the chairman of the Planet Regulatory Board for five years before

his journey to planet Earth.

For over a century Planet Earth has been under observation by the

scientists of Planet Progress. These scientists were amazed to discover the

great similarities between the two planets. They also understood the

criticality of the next two centuries for the survival of the human species

on planet earth.

Due to the amazing similarities between Planet Progress and planet earth,

the scientists believe that humans on planet earth are now in a great

danger. In fact, according to their predictions,, in absence of

constructive intervention, the extinction of the human race on earth is

certain. The scientists had already established that out of billions of

dead planets, there are only a handful of human-inhabited planets.

Presently, earth is one of the inhabited planets that can be physically

reached by their spaceships. And so, in the name of the "human spirit",

they decided to launch an intergalactic rescue mission. They chose Ulysses

to carry out this rescue mission, for many reasons. But perhaps the most

convincing reason was his unique ability to "see" into the subconscious of

other people and, without speaking, directly communicate with their minds.

And so, after light years of travel, Ulysses found himself in the middle of

an empty field on the continent of North America. His stealthy spaceship’s

landing spot was carefully selected by the exploratory team that had landed

on earth several years before. They concluded that North America was the

perfect landing place for an alien to be most likely accepted. The

exploratory team experienced great difficulties in understanding the

natives' cultural habits. Therefore, the first task of Ulysses' mission was

to decipher the driving forces behind the natives' weird behavior patterns.

In order to accomplish this task, the complete historical data- base of

Planet Progress was loaded into his spaceship’s computer. Since the great

resemblance between the two planets might result in historical

similarities, Planet Progress' data- base would assist Ulysses in his first

task. He was told that the first step he had to take for his successful

social acceptance was to acquire a nice vehicle. His spaceship landed

within walking distance of a used car lot; therefore, shortly after

landing, Ulysses owned his first transportation vehicle on Earth.

As he started his great mission, Ulysses looked up to the sky and said

his prayer:

"Please give me the wisdom to find my way in this eternal confusion

and give me the intelligence to enlighten the less fortunate. And, if I do

succeed in my struggle, please give me the strength to remain humble so I

may maintain my wisdom."

THE_ENCOUNTER_WITH_THE_INVINCIBLE_MR_MOLDEDBRAIN

It was late afternoon when Ulysses headed toward Illusion, known

singles bar. He was told that the natives used to drink away their

mysterious frustrations and carry on meaningless conversations there. As he

entered Illusions, his eyes spotted a well-dressed man with a tailored suit

and a smooth "aerodynamic" haircut; however, the man's eyes indicated utter

mental disarray. Ulysses could not resist. He sat down quietly beside the

man and started interrogating the man's subconscious mind…

“ My name is Molded-brain,” replied the suffering soul. " I am a top

manager in a corporation called Go-For-it. I an very powerful and I can

fire and hire by the stroke of a pen, yet I am miserable and unhappy. I

have been working the last twenty years day and night just like a slave.

Even though I've had great accomplishments I am going nowhere. I have no

future and will never fulfill my dreams.”

Ulysses had to interrupt the overflow of grief. He thought for a

moment that the poor man was suffering from a terrible terminal disease.

"This dream of yours must be really something,” commented Ulysses.

“ I have lost all hope; I will never be a millionaire I dream of and I

will end up just an ordinary nobody,“ replied the suffering man.

"A millionaire, huh," wondered Ulysses. “ What is this about being a

millionaire? “

“You name it, “answered the man in agony. ”I can buy a mansion, I can own a

Rolls Royce and a private jet, and I can actually eat a pound of lobster

every evening…‘

“ And what will you do with all these wonderful possessions? ”Inquired

Ulysses.

“You don't understand," said the man impatiently “I could have all

those pretty girls and actually make love to all of them any time my heart

desired. All my neighbors would adore me and I would be the symbol of

success. Instead, I am nobody, my net worth is only a quarter of a million,

and I own only a Mazda."

It was then that Ulysses recalled from his briefing, prior to his

departure from planet- progress, that many natives had this great identity

confusion that lead them to believe that they were what they owned. He

noted to himself that this self- inflicted misconception required a

9

thorough analysis and he was determined to have a long conversation with

SmartAce, as soon as he got back to his spaceship.

Turning his head, Ulysses suddenly noticed a pretty-looking woman

staring at him with passionate eyes. It must be spring, he concluded, since

the little lady seemed to be just ripe and he was definitely ready for a

bite. Although it was not easy to ignore her well-curved body, it was her

state of mind that captured his attention. He walked over to her and

introduced himself.

"My name is Ulysses and I am from Planet Progress; nice to meet you,"

said Ulysses.

"Gee whiz," she immediately replied, "I never heard that line before.

My name is Scatterbrain; at least that's what my ex-husband called me.

Unfortunately, he disappeared six months ago.“

Ulysses spotted at once this contradiction between the woman’s high

intellectual potential and her great mental emptiness. She talked and

talked, but never said anything meaningful. She was greatly concerned about

the firmness of her body, and about the sharpness of her dress, her

hairstyle, her car, her bills, and her pet. She really tried to impress him

and she definitely wanted to go to bed with him.

It was then that Ulysses recalled another part of his briefing at

planet progress about the natives' obsession with their looks and almost

total disregard for their intellect. He knew that powerful forces were

required to create such a distortion in the human mind. As Ulysses debated

between graceful escape from the woman or the surrender to his desires, he

had already visualized the next morning after taste and the inevitable

intellectual hangover. Something told him that this woman could lead him to

a breakthrough in understanding those obscure brain damaging forces that

act on the natives. He took her phone number, promised to call her back,

and then rushed back to his spaceship.

It was raining outside. While waiting for the rain to subside, he sat

down and sketched his impression of the encounter with the invincible Mr.

Molded-brain. He drew him grasping his endless new possessions and gorging

on countless lobsters. He sketched up top, Mr. Molded-brain's wet dream of

lined-up girls waiting to fulfill their ultimate dream; down below he added

the wave of standing ovations from his neighbors.

On Planet Progress they taught every one the art of communication by

sketches. A good sketch was a very effective method to convey complex and

abstract thoughts. In fact, a sketch initiated the best conversations he

ever had with SmartAce. He was wondering what kind of story this new sketch

might bring up from the depth of SmartAce’s memory.

THE_GREAT_CONSUMPTION_AGE

Ulysses entered his space ship and pressed the attention key of

SmartAce.

"Hi SmartAce, “ he said, "I am back and have drawn a sketch; Can you

please provide me your interpretation."

SmartAce was the nickname of the spaceship's almighty computer.

SmartAce scanned the sketch for two seconds and a heavy smoke cloud emerged

from behind the console.

"Stop this nonsense, will you!" said Ulysses.

The smoke cloud was usually a teasing sign and it meant that a long story

was on the way. The title read:

‘The Great Consumption Age ‘

By Professor Plavious, Chief of the Historical Data Base of Planet Progress

And so the story goes:

“The Great Consumption Age, or GCA, began two centuries ago and lead

directly to the Great Disaster Era. It happened just when it seemed as if

the human masses finally had the ability to control their own destiny.

However, instead, they were turned into zombies and were left in the land

of self- deception.

The ruling lords argued that the way to the well being of their little

fellow men were beyond the masses comprehension. And they had a good reason

for this belief. Indeed, for generation after generation, whenever the

masses took over, a state of national chaos soon followed. By the turn of

the GCA a new form of government was evolving; it was called by some the

‘Government of the People’ and by others ‘Democracy’. This newly evolving

form of government imposed a great danger on the ruling lords. The ruling

lords always fought among themselves in an attempt to monopolize the

planet's human resources. For thousands of years they ruthlessly subjugated

the masses. The masses were turned into ‘tiny blood cells’ suited to serve

the rulers' empires. Non-cooperative ‘blood cells’ were purged. Free￾thinking ‘blood cells’ were annihilated. The ‘blood cells’ had to be

brainless.

And then, something terrible happened. A virus started to emerge and

it penetrated the ‘blood cells’. The virus was called ‘knowledge’. Like

cancer, it spread through entire empires, terrifying the ruling lords. At

the turn of the GCA masses of infected ‘blood cells’ turned against entire

empires and wiped out the ruling lords. New savage empires were formed and

instead of ruling lords, gangs of infected ‘blood cells’ were attempting to

collectively control empires. The gangs had no class, no culture, no

tradition and questionable values. They became a great danger to the

remaining ruling lords. It was then that the ruling lords decided to take

action. Secret meetings were held by thier agents. The newly coined slogan

aimed to spearhead the war against the carcinogenic virus of knowledge was

‘Give Them A New Drug’.

Unfortunately, the ‘old social drug’ was loosing its potency. For

several hundred years now, the masses were mentally crippled and

intellectually sedated by self-imposed fear. The human’s ancient fear of

the unknown future was brilliantly manipulated by agents of the ruling

lords, who were known by the name of clergy. The masses were led to believe

that an eternal reward was waiting for them if they followed the rituals

12

prescribed by the clergy. These rituals, often referred to as religion,

drugged the masses, for centuries. The drugged masses became a tasty prey

for the ruling lords.

Populations of entire continents were thoroughly digested while being

drugged. However, the dangerously spreading virus of knowledge started to

neutralize the old drug. The old drug was becoming obsolete. A new drug was

urgently needed. This new drug had to faithfully serve the aspirations of

the power hungry ruling lords for another millennium, but had to be much

more sophisticated than the old one. It also aimed for total control of the

masses. Engineered to stimulate rather than suppress primitive human

desires, above all, it was designed to forever uproot the plaguing virus of

knowledge. In short, the new drug had to launch the masses into a restless

and mindless productive orbit, while guaranteeing the power monopoly of the

ruling lords.

The development of the new drug was not easy. Several decades were

required to fine-tune it. It was all- together a new drug, administered in

radically new methods and developed with entirely new tools. This new drug

had many shapes and forms and it was delivered (primarily by the TV)

directly into the masses brain. It had a tremendous effect not only on the

masses, but also on the entire planet. Many individual human beings were

sent into a state of constant frustration compounded with feelings of

depravation. It also triggered in them an addiction to external

stimulation, to counteract the drug-induced emptiness. These individuals

were called Zombie Consumers. The new drug induced in them an insatiable

appetite to consume every conceivable commodity. It included all shapes and

forms of material goods, a variety of chemical substances, and all kinds of

sexual and gastronomical objects. For them, consumption became the essence

of life. They were literally consumed by the need to consume. Their motto

was: ‘We are what we consume’. And that was just the beginning. Their new

desire caused a great economical fire on the planet that lasted more than

200 years. It was this enormous fire that brought the human species to the

brink of extinction”.

All of a sudden, great darkness fell on the spaceship control room

and SmartAce's screen started to flicker with a continually expanding

image. It started as a little spot in the screen's center, and constantly

grew until Ulysses could finally recognize the image. The title said: ‘A

Zombie Consumer - product of the Great Consumption Age’. Loud sounding

trumpet music introduced the image, and, finally, SmartAce’s voice came

alive as he cheerfully said "Voila. "
