The Agroforestry Extension Training Sourcebook was developed to help guide the learning and experiences of people

committed to helping farmers improve the quality of their land and their lives. For the ideas and approaches promoted here I

am indebted to the CARE-Kenya agroforestry extension staff and farmers of Siaya District with whom I first worked. Their

dedication and insight was my inspiration in first developing this training curriculum, special appreciation goes to Pascal

Otieno, Dorothy Leteipan and Remko Vonk for their efforts in promoting ways to share knowledge about trees, farms and

farmers.

The Government of Kenya’s Forest Department and Andreas Speich provided essential advice and guidance in developing

the Saiya agroforestry extension training program. I am particularly grateful to them for their support and regular assistance

throughout the initial stages of this training curriculum.

A number of international institutions have been instrumental in providing information and knowledge about agroforestry

practices and helpful data colection methods. I would like to note the role of the International Council for Research in

Agroforestry and in particular, to thank John Raintree, Dianne Rocheleau and Sara Sherr for our fruitful collaboration. The

FAO/SIDA Forest Trees and People Program provided moral support for this publication. To this group I extend my

education, communication and training have helped to shape the content of this training manual with a view to the user.
