ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

The Agroforestry Extension Training Sourcebook was developed to help guide the learning and experiences of people

committed to helping farmers improve the quality of their land and their lives. For the ideas and approaches promoted here I

am indebted to the CARE-Kenya agroforestry extension staff and farmers of Siaya District with whom I first worked. Their

dedication and insight was my inspiration in first developing this training curriculum, special appreciation goes to Pascal

Otieno, Dorothy Leteipan and Remko Vonk for their efforts in promoting ways to share knowledge about trees, farms and

farmers.

The Government of Kenya’s Forest Department and Andreas Speich provided essential advice and guidance in developing

the Saiya agroforestry extension training program. I am particularly grateful to them for their support and regular assistance

throughout the initial stages of this training curriculum.

A number of international institutions have been instrumental in providing information and knowledge about agroforestry

practices and helpful data colection methods. I would like to note the role of the International Council for Research in

Agroforestry and in particular, to thank John Raintree, Dianne Rocheleau and Sara Sherr for our fruitful collaboration. The

FAO/SIDA Forest Trees and People Program provided moral support for this publication. To this group I extend my

sincerest thanks.

I am grateful to Peter Hetz for his editing and his contributions to the format and design of the Sourcebook. His skills in

education, communication and training have helped to shape the content of this training manual with a view to the user.

Jared Crawford has been instrumental in giving supervision and guidance to the graphic design and production of the

Sourcebook. I am thankful to him for providing creativity and essential links between the text the illustrations, the artists and

the technical production of this manual.

Much of the Sourcebook has come alive thanks to the talents of a group of local artists. Through their collective skills, the

artists of CARE-Kenya’s Educational Resources Development Unit have brought ideas and text to life. My appreciation goes

to: Michael Alando, Ham Kakembo, Sara Kamau, Mwaura Kirore, Dorothy Migadde, Gachungi Mungau, Paul Mwalimo, and

Davidson Njoroge. Asante Sana for your help and patience throughout the production of the Sourcebook

I am indebted to Nina Marshall for her diligence and efforts in the final months of producing both the Sourcebook and the

Sourcebook Support Materials. She provided valuable input into the final text as well as taking on responsibility for

compilation of the Support Materials, and coordinating them with modules in the Sourcebook.

I would also like to note the assistance of Annie Kairaba, who had the time-consuming and uninspiring job of entering (and

re-entering) the manuscript on to the computer. Thank you Annie.

Christine N'gan'ga was the first to tackle my early computer drafts of the Sourcebook. Thank you for your assistance before

the Sourcebook went to the editor.

Thanks also go to Elaine Douglas for help with checking the manuscript for typing and grammatical errors.

I would also like to acknowledge the support and cooperation of the management of CARE-lntemational in Kenya Their

administrative assistance is most appreciated.

There are many individuals working with CARE in the area of Agriculture and Natural Resources who provided helpful

reviews and comments on sections of the Sourcebook I am grateful for their feedback and collegial support They

recognized the need and importance of this training curriculum, and have long been looking forward to its completion. Here it

is gang!

My very special appreciation and thanks go to John Michael Kramer for having maintained his constant support and vision of

the utility of the Sourcebook. His assistance and tireless efforts to recruit talent and find funds, I hope find some fruition in the

following pages.

Finally, to Jay and Daniel, my love and gratitude for their patience and encouragement throughout this effort
